DHL to expand Salt Lake facility

Plantation, FL-based express delivery company DHL said it plans to expand its operations and construct a new $4.3 million, 62,000-sq-ft service center facility at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

Currently, DHL noted it operates only a “pass-through” ramp operation at the airport, where packages are off-loaded from its dedicated aircraft and shuttled to its existing service center in West Valley City, UT. Construction started this month on a larger service center that will consolidate both facilities, strategically located at the airport, which will result in earlier delivery times and later drop off cut-off times for local customers, said Michael Epeneter, senior vp-operations at DHL.

“By expanding the size of our current service center, we’ll be positioned to accommodate a decade of growth in the Salt Lake City area,” he said. Epeneter noted that the facility will handle a wide variety of shipments – including domestic and international parcels as well as palletized and container freight. It will employ 142 DHL employees and associates when fully operational on Aug. 1.
