Bigger engines for GM light-duties in ’07

General Motors’ Chevrolet Colorado and GMCCanyon pickups, as well as the Hummer H3 SUV, will get new, larger-displacement inline 4- and 5-cyl. engines in 2007.

The Vortec 2.9L DOHC 4-cyl. with variable valve timing (VVT) delivers 185 hp. and 190 lb.-ft. of torque; it replaces the 2.8L 4-cyl. The Vortec 3.7L DOHC 5-cyl. with VVT is rated at 242 hp., 242 lb.-ft. of torque; it replaces the 3.5L.

The 2.9L engine produces 6% more horsepower and 3% more torque than the model it replaces, while the 3.7L generates 22 more horsepower and 17-lb.-ft. of additional torque than its predecessor, according to GM.

The 2.9L will be standard in all Colorado and Canyon models in ’07, with the exception of the 4WD crew cab, which gets the 3.7L as its base powerplant. The ’07 Hummer H3 and H3X are available only with the 3.7L Vortec engine.
