This year is shaping up to be a momentous year for clean transportation across the country—with OEMs, trucking fleets, and regulators all making new announcements and doubling down on cleaner fuels and more efficient technologies. With all of this activity over the last year, the stage is set for the 2017 Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, North America’s largest clean fleet event. Taking place May 1-4 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Southern California, the conference will feature the increasing array of commercially available and rapidly developing technologies for sustainable fleet operations.
In the heavy-duty vehicle sector, we have reached a new era, one characterized by an array of zero emission technologies. They range from full battery electric trucks, buses and other equipment to hydrogen fuel cell trucks that can travel 1,200 mi., ultra-low emission heavy-duty natural gas and propane autogas engines that are commercially available today. And many believe we will see clean diesel engines fight back in the coming years. Local, state, and federal regulators have noticed these advancements and are charging ahead with low-NOx rulemaking efforts at the national level. Other regulatory topics that will be covered include the following:
- EPA/DOT NHTSA’s Phase 1 and 2 greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency standards,
- Euro VI emissions regulations for heavy-duty vehicles,
- EPA 2018 trailer standards,
- EPA 2021 truck and engine standards, and
- Developing regulations for platooning, automation and driverless trucks.
Meanwhile, leading progressive fleets are making big investments in zero and near-zero emission technologies that when combined with renewable fuels can provide a heavy-duty vehicle platform that has virtually no emissions. With up to $4.7 billion that will be distributed from the Volkswagen Consent Decree settlement to fund advanced clean transportation technology purchases, fueling infrastructure, and market acceleration activities, up to $2.7 billion will be spent on emission-cutting and a variety of low-emission and alternative fuel vehicle deployment projects. Money from the Volkswagen settlement will be distributed at the state level by designated “beneficiaries.” Details on who these beneficiaries will be and how the money will be spent at the state level will be covered in depth during a workshop at ACT Expo.
