Cummins to power new Foton Motor truck

April 9, 2014

Engine maker Cummins will supply an ISG engine for use in a new Foton Motor Co. GTL truck. The G Series truck for the Chinese market will initially be manufactured by the Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co. (BFCEC), a 50-50 joint venture between Cummins and Foton.

The newly launched Foton Daimler Auman GTL “Super Power” truck is designed to meet customers’ demands for performance and reliability, the companies said during a joint unveiling of the vehicle at Cummins’ Indianapolis, IN, headquarters. The new truck model, which will be manufactured in Beijing by Foton Daimler Automotive Co. Ltd. (BFDA), a 50-50 joint venture between Foton and Daimler, is expected to significantly improve customer experience with fuel economy, safety, reliability, driveability and total cost of ownership, they said.

“The joint venture between Foton and Cummins successfully introduced the Cummins ISF light-duty engine platform in 2008, which has grown to be a leading power in the light-duty commercial vehicle market. Today, with Foton’s deep knowledge of truck customers, Foton and Cummins have worked together to synchronize the development of Cummins ISG engine and the new GTL Super Power truck for best integration. We aim at setting a new benchmark in the high-end heavy-duty truck market through breakthrough technologies,” said Wang Jinyu, general manager - Foton. “The result is improved customer experience. Through joint-venture cooperation with Cummins and Daimler, respectively, and by leveraging the complementary strengths of Cummins, Foton and Daimler, we are able to provide customers the values and benefits they care about most.”

“The cooperation on ISG is a natural extension of the successful integration of Cummins ISF engine and Foton trucks," said Steve Chapman, Cummins group vice president - China and Russia. “It once again demonstrates the vigor and strength that a win-win partnership can bring to both companies. We expect that the successful application of Cummins ISG engine in Foton trucks will make a unique contribution, as Foton is poised to expand its business even faster in the years ahead.”

The ISG heavy-duty engine platform is an in-line 6-cylinder engine, and is available in 11L and 12L models to meet a broad variety of global market requirements and emissions standards. Design and development of the engine have been led by a team in the United States, and supported by global technical and marketing resources with deep knowledge of local market and customer needs. That global design approach utilizes the latest advanced technologies to develop an adaptive architecture, with each engine designed to meet unique performance and cost-of-ownership expectations for its target market and region, Cummins said.

During the launch event, Cummins and BFCEC also signed a development contract to bring the engine to off-highway Tier 4 Final and on-highway Euro VI standards.

“The application of ISG engine will create the foundation for us to expand the width and depth in China’s truck market - one of the largest in the world - and where robust demand will continue to drive growth as China is implementing tougher emissions standards for environmental and sustainable benefits,” said Rich Freeland, Cummins vice president and president of Engine Business. “The cooperation on ISG once again demonstrates our shared commitment to the environment. That commitment has resulted in us creating a product line that will not only please our customers, but will further cement our commitment to ensuring that everything we do leads to a cleaner environment.”
